TToT - 6/02/17

Ten Things of Thankful

Welcome to Ten Things of Thankful... and a new month begins!

We gather here each weekend to share our posts about the things we are thankful for in our lives, and sometimes just to report that we've survived a difficult week; when we start focusing on the positives and the silver linings, we are able see that life is good. We also encourage each other by sharing pieces of our own journey. The people who participate in TToT are a truly awesome bunch from all age groups and all walks of life; I hope you'll join us and invite your blog friends to do the same, everyone is welcome!

At Ten Things of Thankful we believe that there are many little things in our lives to be thankful for each day as well as the big things that stand out. Keep in mind that you are not required to list ten things if you can't come up with that many, nobody is keeping score, just do the best you can!  You'll find that once you get started, more things tend to pop into your head! There is no specific format required for your post, you are encouraged to do it your way. Variety makes it interesting!  :-)

This week's TToT link-up will open shortly after midnight (Central Time) on Thursday night, and will remain open until Tuesday night, so you have plenty of time to work on your post.

Please visit as many of the links as possible, sharing your thoughts is what this group is all about; and PLEASE check back next week for new links that were added later, those folks will appreciate your comments too!

Thank you for your part in making our Ten Things of Thankful blog such a blessing,
Josie Two Shoes

Please take a moment to answer the following questions in the comments section below. It's a fun way for us to get to know each other a little better.  Do you plant any flowers or vegetables? What is your favorite thing to grow?

  1. I am here early this week, first to answer the question, as I am off on vacation tomorrow, until the next TToT.

My answer is I am not great with the whole planting and dirt thing, though I love nature and growing things. It's my mom who always had a big garden and was growing flowers, planting strawberries, peas, cucumbers and all sorts of other things.

Peas were always my favourite, with strawberries coming in second.

Now she has a smaller yard and plants flowers there and at my place for me. Recently her neighbour asked why my mom plants flowers at my house if I can't see them anyway. My mom's answer was mine. I still love growing things. Flowers aren't only visual. I like to smell the roses when I can.

    :-)

And it's also nice to make my yard look pretty for other people.

    1. It was great to see you showing up first this week, especially when you were trying to get ready for a vacation! I love fresh peas from the garden! You are so right, even if you can't see the flowers at your house, you can touch their soft petals and inhale their sweet smells, and even that is wonderful! <3 It is nice to make your yard attractive too!

  2. My thumb is not green, it is black. It sounds crazy, but it is true, i have even managed to kill silk houseplants. In fact, plants commit suicide when they know i will own them. If i had a nice little herb garden over the window in the kitchen like some people do, it would be known as death row. The whole plant thing is beyond me.

    1. LOL at the "death row" herb garden! You are so funny! Anything I try to grow needs to be cat proof and cat safe, and thrive on neglect!

  3. My husband has landscaped our yard beautifully over the years. We have trees and flowers and groves and gardens. As a matter of fact, I think I'll use that for my TToT post later today.

    1. You are blessed with your very own gardener and he does an amazing job at making your yard such a beautiful place to spend summertime! Great theme for a TToT post!

    1. I love your Una garden, and watching all the labor that is going into it... much nicer to observe than doing the hard preparation work, but I suspect it will be well worth it when it's flourishing! :-)

  5. I am not planting this year. I will be more like weeding yard. I do have a pot of herbs, and two pots of flowering plant. One died, the other--dying, and the third is showing signs of ... I am too busy to care for them these days. I do like planting herbs though.

    1. If we attempted to remove the weeds from our yard we would be left with dirt! Grass requires huge amounts of water here to survive our hot summmer sun. I enjoy growing pots of flowers or herbs, I seem to do a little better with them, but I do tend to forget to water them, or else my husband and I both do and they drown! :-)

  6. I plant nothing - I am not gardening-inclined. Love to look, would maybe like to grow one in theory, but can't get past the whole bug thing. Nope and nope.

    1. I am completely surprised by this. You prepare such healthy meals. I am surprised the lure of your own fresh veggies right outside the back door has not pulled you outside!

    2. This surprised me too! I am ok with bugs, as long as they don't eat the veggies, but I do not like encountering snakes hiding in the garden, even if they are "good snakes"! With your allergies, like mine, I'm betting that many plants would make you itchy/sneezy/wheezy! :-)

    3. May, the biggest reason is that we do not actually have any land. Our townhome is a condo and we own the building and "one inch outside" (whatever that means). But the little bit of "yard" we have in front is mostly landscaped, cared for by a team the condo association hires. And the land out back is common area - not for planting. I would definitely love to have the fresh veggies outside and perhaps in our next home (which will NOT be this style) that will happen. But still the bug factor...nope.
Josie, I hadn't even thought of snakes, but now that you mention it...another NOPE! My allergies seem to be much better than they've been in recent years. Not sure how a garden would affect them.
Zilla wants to try some container gardening with a little package we got from our CSA farm last year and never planted. We should be able to make that work on our little deck. We shall see.

  7. We've tried planting a variety of house plants and container gardening outdoors several times with not so good results mostly. I've even managed to kill a cactus! LOL
We keep trying though. Currently we have a few succulents in the windowsill, an orchid that is probably dead, and my 9 year old just planted a cabbage outside so we'll see how that goes.

    1. LOL at killing a cactus. I have one I forget about for weeks at a time, then revive it again with a cup of water! (I have been known to burn soup, so unlikely doesn't mean impossible! :-) I love succulents their fleshy leaves are so pretty! I had a lovely jade plant... until my cat sat on it! Keep us posted on the cabbage!

  8. Proving that hope springs eternal, I plant tomatoes every single summer. One year this endeavor was fruitful!

    1. I love the spirit that keeps trying! I've grown cherry tomatoes in containers before, it seems the times I tried garden tomatoes the bugs and worms loved them even more than we did! My husband loves tomatoes and would eat them every day if we were growing them. :-) The little yellow pear-shaped tomatoes are my favorites.

    2. See now tomatoes I would love to have outside my door every day. I've seen these hanging tomato things - are they any good?

  9. The heat and I don't get along well and bad knees make gardening difficult, not to mention that rabbits are plentiful here and would have to be fenced out. I have done some big veggie gardens in the past, but at the moment I have a big pot of moss roses on the deck, and that's my growing endeavor for this year. :-)

    1. Let's see if I can just remember to keep it watered and to protect it from sandstorms and hail! We do have two Christmas cactuses that thrive in our East window... and survive bouts of neglect quite well, surprisingly.

  10. I probably won't be planting much this year other than putting in some plants in the pots on the deck. I'm a believer in having a garden, and we have had very large gardens in the past, but my body doesn't do well with long hours caring for a garden these days. There will probably be a some plants that miraculously appear out where we have planted a
garden in the past. We will see who finds them first, the gophers, ground squirrels or us. :-) I guess my favorite thing to grow are houseplants.

    1. I'm pretty much like you, Pat, just not physically up to the task of maintaining a veggie garden, though I would love a small raised one, I think. I do love how rogue plants show up from previous gardens, I've had watermelons, pumpkins, and zuchhini reappear that way in the past! Houseplants are limited here due to four cats who love to play in them, and turn hanging plants into arial trapezes!
